Closed-door Roundtable Discussion on The Future of Myanmar’s Quagmire and Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship 2025

On the 9th of May 2024, Bait Al Amanah organised a closed-door roundtable discussion on The Future of Myanmar’s Quagmire and Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship 2025.


This closed-door event assembled thought leaders from diverse backgrounds particularly Members of Parliament, government officials, academics and subject matter experts. Dr Abdul Razak Ahmad, the Founding Director of Bait Al Amanah, launched the roundtable discussion with a welcoming address on the complexity of the crisis currently occurring in Myanmar and the proactive action Malaysia should take to alleviate the crisis.


This was followed by a discussion featuring two experienced speakers: Tan Sri Dr Syed Hamid Albar, the Former Foreign Minister of Malaysia and Mr Thomas Daniel, Senior Fellow of the Institute of Strategic and International Studies (ISIS) Malaysia. They both shared their perspective and insights on ‘Malaysia’s Past Experience and Future Trajectory of Myanmar’s Conflict’. Their thought-provoking insights enlightened the audiences on the landscape and trajectory of Myanmar’s crisis as well as its impact on our region and Malaysia in particular.


This was followed by a compelling keynote address given by Tan Sri Yohei Sasakawa, Special Envoy of the Japanese Government for National Reconciliation in Myanmar. He shared his perspectives on the ongoing crisis in Myanmar and expressed hope for a better future for the country.


The roundtable discussion continued with another discussion on the role of the international community and the overview of the humanitarian crisis ongoing in Myanmar. This session featured Ms Lilianne Fan, Co-founder and International Director of Geutanyoe Foundation and Mr Kyaw Win, the Head of International Relations of Muslim of Myanmar Multi-ethnic Consultative Committee (MMMCC). Drawing on their experience on the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Myanmar, the panellists provided enlightening insights that aided fellow discussants and participants to understand the reality and complexity of the issue currently happening.


Guiding the flow of this discussion was Mr. Karisma Putera Abd Rahman, the Research and Advocacy Analyst in the Foreign Affairs & International Security Division at Bait Al Amanah. The participants offered views that both varied and coalesced in numerous aspects and demonstrated a widely shared opinion of the issues being discussed.
