Daily Express: Nominated Sabah seats should go to women

Updated: Oct 14

Three non-governmental organisations’ advocating to increase women’s legislative representation proposed a “Women’s Only Additional Seats” (WOAS) concept for Sabah to increase women’s legislative representation by ensuring the six Nominated Assemblymen seats in Sabah are dedicated to women.  This was the key message of the workshop titled “Enhancing Women’s Political Representation” was held in Kota Kinabalu on the 7th and 8th of October, jointly organized by Projek SAMA, Bait Al Amanah (House of Trust), Pergerakan Orang Wanita Empowerment and Revolution (POWER), and the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI).

Projek Sama Convener Ngeow Chow Ying, Bait All Amanah Research Director Benedict Weerasena and Pergerakan Orang Wanita Empowerment dan Revolution (Power) Founder Datin Fazar Arif in a joint press conference, hoped Sabah would take the lead in achieving greater political representation for women through WOAS.

“Sabah has slipped significantly behind this target after 34 years, even though the United Nations has mandated a minimum representation of women in decision-making positions at 30 per cent since 1990,” they said. “Just three (or 12.0 per cent) of the 25 members of parliament are female and out of 73 elected state assemblypersons, women make up just six, or 8.2 per cent.”
