Yesterday, Bait Al Amanah, with support from AstraZeneca Malaysia, hosted an event titled “Parliamentary Engagement Roundtable (Post-Budget 2027): Strengthening Healthcare Financing for Access to Innovative Medicines”.

Ten days after Budget 2027 was tabled, we brought parliamentarians from both Houses into one room with officials, clinicians, academics and fellow think tankers. The question was simple: is Malaysia investing enough in health, and in the right places?

We covered a lot of ground in one morning: where public healthcare investment is heading, how to pay for it sustainably, and where prevention, earlier diagnosis, innovation and clinical research fit in. The best part was a candid and frank conversation about the hard bit: turning Budget allocations and policy commitments into real improvements in access and patient outcomes.

We take this opportunity to thank:

- YBhg. Dato’ Prof. Ulung Dr. Rajah Rasiah for a keynote that set the tone for everything after it.

- Dr. Svetlana Yanchuk, Country President of AstraZeneca Malaysia, for opening the morning.

- Prof. Dr Asrul Akmal Shafie for walking us through the health fiscal space in Malaysia.

- YB Dato' Muhammad Bakhtiar bin Wan Chik, YB Datuk Wan Saiful Wan Jan, YB Dr Hajah Halimah Ali and YB Senator Robert Lau Hui Yew for making the time to join us, alongside representatives from the offices of YB Datuk Andi Muhammad Suryady bin Bandy and YB Senator Dr. Jufitri Joha.

Closed-door sessions only work when people are candid. So, to all our participants from medicine, academia, the public service and the policy community who came ready to argue, question and build – thank you.

Bait Al Amanah looks forward to further engagement on this topic as the budget debate progresses further.
